Svend Wiig-Hansen – Skulptur

Svend Wiig-Hansen
Gipsskulptur.

Plaster sculpture, reclining figure, unsigned. Executed approx. 1996. H. 28.5, L. 68, W. 20 cm.

Provenance: The sculpture belonged to former museum technician at Thorvaldsens Museum, Erik Vinholdt Schiøtt, and remained in his possession until his death earlier this year.

Literature: A corresponding model is mentioned and depicted in landscape architect Torben Schønherr’s article “Pladsen foran Thorvaldsens Museum” from the museum’s journal/yearbook “Meddelelser fra Thorvaldsens Museum”, 1998, pp. 200-204.

In 1992, the museum’s board granted 1.7 million DKK for the construction of the 3-meter-high and 6-meter-long sculpture, but upon Wiig Hansen’s death in 1997, the sculpture was not sufficiently completed and was therefore never installed on the square.

The last two photos show Torben Schønherr’s original sketch with the sculpture placed in front of the museum, as well as a “trick photo” of a corresponding, but smaller, sketch model.
